Biography
Abstract painter Sophie Capron b1982, studied at Winchester School of Art, where she pursued a BA Hons in Textile Art. During her degree, she embarked on a transformative period of study in Japan – an experience that infused her work with cultural nuances. Sophie secured funding and had her application accepted for a residency with Picture Berlin. After completing the residency, Sophie was subsequently invited to participate in an international exhibition in Berlin. Sophie’s work is inspired by the erosion of our urban environment, and the relationship between humans and nature, building up sgraffito mark making into layers of recycled paint to reference this. Through her art, she explores the delicate balance between human impact and nature’s resilience.
She has exhibited internationally in France, where she represented Cornwall, and was subsequently invited to exhibit at the ‘Women in Contemporary Art’ Biennale in Larmor-Plage. Exhibitions in Brussels, Germany, Texas, Boston and New York soon followed. Since 2019 she has had four major exhibitions at Artwave West, exhibited at the Crypt Gallery, St Ives and has had successful joint exhibitions with the Ceramicist, Jake Boex at the Summer House Gallery and recently at ArtWave West with Hannah Lane.
Beyond her studio, she has been an active member of Cornwall’s artistic community. In 2022 she joined the Newlyn Society of Artists and is currently a committee member, helping to organise biannual exhibitions at Tremenheere sculpture gardens.
Sophie was awarded the Create Award at the DRIFT Journal Awards in October 2025 and her work sits in a collection alongside artists such as Patrick Heron, Terry Frost, Sandra Blow and Peter Lanyon amongst others.
Sophie is currently represented by Artwave West, ArtDog London, Summerhouse Gallery and Bowie Gallery.
